Learning Expectations and Goals
Language
This month we will continue to focus on proofreading their own writing. They will check to make sure their sentences make sense and have everything they need to make them a "real sentence". The chart posted here is a form of checklist they will use every day as they learn how to proofread and edit.
We have started writing descriptions. Your child will be following the writing process (brainstorm, first draft, edit, final copy) to write their own description.
During our guided reading groups, the students will continue to focus on strategies that will help with both reading new words and understanding what they are reading. Sight word recognition is a key factor for reading fluency. Your child will benefit from daily practise of reading sight words both in lists (home reading sight word booklet) or in context (home reading books). I enjoy listening to your child read their list of sight words each Friday and it is so nice to see how proud they are of their own accomplishments after having worked hard all week on their list.

Math
Continued in February....
This month the children will begin using their knowledge and understanding of number skills (counting, ordering, comparing, composing, decomposing) to solve a variety of problems.
The children will follow the following steps as they work on solving problems both independently and with a partner:
1. Read the problem
2. Talk about the problem to identify the important information
3. Choose a strategy to solve the problem
4. Solve the problem using pictures, numbers, words
5. Explain math thinking (how the problem was solved)

Each day the children continue to participate in Number Talks. Number talks are short, daily exercises aimed at building number sense. Number sense is the ability to play with numbers' meanings, visualize to solve problems, perform calculations quickly and build flexibility with mathematical strategies. Number Talks allow students to enter into the conversation at any level, as all math thinking and strategies are accepted and discussed.
